The full moon after next Wednesday's will be on Thursday, December 31, 2009. That means there will be two full moons during a single month this year, a relatively rare occurrence. That's why it's called a BLUE MOON, as in "once in a blue moon".

P.S. Why do I say "relatively rare" ? According to Joe Rao of
"months containing two full moons occur on average every 2.72 years, or every 2 years plus 8 or 9 months."
