Love in the Afternoon

Photographer Murray Head spied on these extraordinary creatures in the Shakespeare Garden on the afternoon of 9/18. They are Differential Grasshoppers [Melanoplus differentialis], among the largest and handsomest of our orthopterans. They are easily identified by the black herringbone markings on the upper part [femur] of their hind legs.
